Bursary Scheme
In 2006. Rachel Berry from Lingfield became the first recipient of a Snelling Voluntary Service Bursary. She received £1.000 towards the total of £4,000 which she had to raise for her exciting and demanding project. As a result, Rachel is now teaching chemistry and integrated science in New Amsterdam, Guyana, under the auspices of the Project Trust.
Rachel studied chemistry, biology, geography and maths to A level at Oxted School, and on her return from Guyana is reading environmental studies at university.
Details of the bursary, which is limited to those aged 16 and under 22, and resident in the Tandridge District, are available from the church office, Bluehouse Lane, Oxted RH8 0AA (email: oxtedurc@btconnect.com ) or a pdf file can be downloaded HERE.
Snelling Lecture Thursday February 21st 2008:
"More Aid and Less Justice Won't Make Poverty History"
This is the title of the Annual Snelling Lecture, to be given this year by Rt Hon Clare Short, MP, Minister for Overseas Development from 1997 until 2003. Her talk is made possible by sponsorship by Oxted URC in support of the charity Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). Clare may be relied upon to give a cogent critique of the state of Overseas Development in today's dangerous world. In 2003 she said : 'We're at a crossroads. We'll either make the world more just and more fair or it will become more and more bitterly divided and conflict-ridden'. Her views on progress (or otherwise) since then should be fascinating!
